Edward Cullen is a vampire member of the Olympic Coven, originally from Chicago, Illinois. When the Spanish influenza epidemic swept through Chicago in 1918, Edward was dying — and Dr. Carlisle Cullen turned him into a vampire to save him. For nearly a century he existed in a state of brooding eternal teen-hood, perfecting piano and reading literally every book ever written, until he met Isabella Swan at Forks High School and his entire unlife was upended.
Edward is famously a "vegetarian" vampire — meaning he drinks only animal blood, never human. He has the gift of telepathy, able to read the thoughts of anyone within range, with one critically annoying exception: Bella's mind is silent to him. Which is, of course, exactly why he becomes obsessed.
